Exercise 9.1

A housewarming party invitation

Your new life has settled down and the last moving boxes have been unpacked: it’s high time to throw a housewarming party. You want to invite your new friends from the local community college and some of your new neighbours to your party.

Start by writing an invitation. Remember to give all the essential information on the party! Submit your invitation below.

Exercise 9.2

Party food

There is no party unless there’s plenty of good food! You want to treat your guests to some Finnish delicacies as well as some local food. As you want to be sure everything goes well and there won’t be any kitchen surprises, plan your menu in the box below.

What would be the Finnish delicacy you’d like to offer? Most likely you will have to bake it yourself and as you are sure some of your guests will want to have the recipe, write it down in English, as well.

Alternatively, you can explain the following Finnish delicacies in English, in your own words:

  • Karjalanpiirakka
  • Korvapuusti
  • Kalakukko
  • Lörtsy
  • Poronkäristys

Exercise 9.3

See you later!

The last guests have just left and you’re sitting on your sofa, feeling tired but happy. The evening was a success, all of the guests enjoyed themselves - you simply had a blast. The tidying up can wait until tomorrow. You are sitting and thinking about your new life, what has happened and how things have turned out like this. Write down some feelings and comments on this trip: what have you learned during the time in your new home town? What has been the best part? Although everything seems to be just fine now, there have been some rocky moments, as well. What have these been?

Write your comments on the course in the box below with the help of the questions above.
