8 Tough times

Again, listen to the text and read it - also out loud! Practice the vocabulary: pronounce and write the words. Look at the grammar and identify the passives. (Kuuntele jälleen teksti ja lue se - myös ääneen! Harjoittele sanastoa: äännä ja kirjoita sanat. Tarkastele myös kappaleen kielioppia ja tunnista passiivit.)

Kuuntele

Henry and Tom are chatting before the game.

Tom: What is the job market like in Finland? Is it easy to find work nowadays?

Henry: I don’t think the job situation very good. Many people have been laid off and many big and small factories and mills have been shut down. Some of my friends have been unemployed for a while. They get an unemployment benefit but they would rather work if they had a chance. One of my friends has a really tough time because he was sacked and his wife is on maternity leave. Jobs are hard to find in their town, even part-time jobs.

Tom: That makes it hard.

Henry: But another friend wants to quit his job because he has to work overtime almost every day. He won’t do it now but he is job hunting. When my old aunt retired this year, over two hundred people applied for the position. That is a lot of applicants! Can you imagine that pile of job applications with copies of cover letters, CVs, school and work certificates, and references? Every application was read by one manager. That was quite a task. I bet she requested a day off after that!

Tom: And some people get to do what they love for a living – and make a fortune like these players! Henry, how good are you in sports? If you were extremely talented, I would love to be your personal manager…

(Nyt voit harjoitella kuullunymmärrystä ja kielioppia samanaikaisesti. Katse nämä kaksi videota ja kertaa passiivi vielä kerran.)

Exercise 8.1 One Job Search Tool

There are many ways to look for a job. Facebook is one tool. Go to Youtube and use Job search on Facebook as your search word. Choose one or two videos.

After watching the video(s) make an audio file where you tell some tips how Facebook can help your job search. Remember to answer in English. Save your file below. (On monta tapaa etsiä työpaikkaa. Facebook on näistä yksi. Mene Youtube-sivustolle ja käytä Job search on Facebook hakusanaa. Valitse yksi tai kaksi videota. Tee nauhoitus, jossa kerrot englanniksi muutamia vinkkejä kuinka Facebook voi auttaa työpaikan etsimisessä. Tallenna nauhoitus alla olevaan kenttään.) Tehtävä arvioidaan arvosanalla (4-10).

The instructions on how to make an audio file are under the course instructions.
