The United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand... All are well-known for - what? What is life like in these countries where the majority of people speak English as their mother tongue? That is a huge topic, but let's take a peek!

Exercise 2.1

TV and Reality

Watch an episode of a popular American, Australian, British or Canadian series on TV or a DVD.  Read the questions listed below before you watch the episode. Write down your answers and submit your text below. 

  • What is the name of the series and what is it about?
  • Do you think it is a typical American/Australian/British/Canadian TV series? Why?
  • How does the TV series / episode portray the American/Australian/British/Canadian lifestyle?
  • Even if you had to watch the episode without any sound, how could you tell the series is American/Australian/British/Canadian?
  • How realistic is the TV series / this particular episode? Why?

Canuck, Kangaroo and Kiwi Power

New Zealand, Australia and Canada usually place at the top of any list that ranks the quality of life between countries. Find out what life is like in those three countries and if you think the ranking is accurate.

Then choose 5 areas of life where you compare New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Finland. List the area of life, how you rank the countries in that, and state your reasons why. Submit your comparison here:
