Lesson 5 - A Short Story 

 This lesson consists of reading or listening to a short story titled A Haunted House by Virginia Woolf, answering some reading comprehension questions about it, learning some vocabulary related to literature as well as learning about some other famous British authors.

A Haunted House
Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was an English author who wrote novels, short stories, and essays. Her best known works are Mrs. Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927), Orlando (1928) and A Room of One’s Own (1929). The short story A Haunted House was published in 1944.

Although it is not necessary to understand every word of any story you read, here is a list of some you can look at before you read or listen to the short story:

After you have read the short story, answer the following questions: 

1)    What were your expectations of the story?
2)    Where does the story take place?
3)    Who are the main characters in the story?
4)    What were the ghosts doing?
5)    How did the owner know the ghosts had been there?
6)    What is the treasure?
